THE MESSINA EARTHQUAKE OF 1908:
- DATE: December 28th 1908
- TIME: approx. 5.20 AM
- MAGNITUDE: approx. 7.2 on the Richter scale.
- DESTRUCTION: almost totally destroyed the city of Messina and caused severe damage in the region. Worst in Europe ever. Resulted in a major tsunami.
- CASUALTIES: estimates vary but well over 100,000 and possibly up to 200,000 people died as a result of this earthquake.
