DESCRIPTION: This video dramatises some of the issues surrounding terminal illness. Medical actors, a General Practitioner, a Consultant and a Community Nurse perform their roles to illustrate the hypothetical case of a 59 year old woman who has been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus. The cancer has spread to the liver and only palliative care can be offered. Although specific, this case highlights some general issues. The questions that the patient and her husband ask, their reactions and the responses of the professional care-givers are convincingly portrayed. The tape should prove useful in group training sessions for professionals who have to deal with terminal illness. It was written and produced by members of the General Practice Unit at Leicester University in England, under the auspices of the Lisa Sainsbury Foundation, an organisation concerned with hospice care.
