ALL ASTRONOMICAL GRAPHICS: Sun - solar structure

Sun - solar structure

Sun - solar structure. This image is 500 x 486 pixels; the original measures 2,222 x 2,160 pixels.

SOLAR STRUCTURE: nuclear fusion occurs in the central core (pale blue) and photons gradually transport the energy to the surface through the radiative zone (green-yellow). The energy then travels to the surface by convection in the convective layer (orange). Powerful magnetic fields that project from the sun are responsible for surface features such as sun spots (lower left quadrant) and the flare like solar prominence (upper right).
